Cicero seorang filsuf pada zaman Romawi mengatakan tentang arti dari persahabatan. Cicero percaya bahwa untuk memiliki persahabatan yang sejati dengan orang lain semuanya harus dalam kejujuran dan kebenaran. Kalau tidak dalam kejujuran dan kebenaran itu bukan persahabatan sejati. Dalam terjemahan Inggrisnya "in order to have a true friendship with someone there must be all honesty and truth." . Dengan menggunakan dasar tersebut maka seorang teman harus jujur 100% dengan temannya dan menaruh kepercayaan 100% ke temannya. Cicero juga percaya untuk seorang dapat berteman dengan orang lain, seseorang harus melakukan sesuatu tanpa mengharapkan apa-apa (tanpa pamrih/balasan). Dan ia percaya apabila temanmu melakukan hal yang salah dan bertentangan dengan nilai moral yang kau pegang, jangan kompromi dengan nilai moral anda. Kita jarus berani menjelaskan bahwa yang dilakukannya adalah salah dan bantu mereka melihat apa yang benar. Karena Cicero percaya ketidakpedulian adalah setan "ignorance is the cause of evil". Dan pada akhirnya Cicero percaya alasan suatu persahabatan berakhir adalah ketika salah seorang dalam hubungan tersebut menjadi buruk.
